A gentle walkthrough of the physiology of exam anxiety — and three things you can do in the last five minutes before the invigilator hands out the sheet.

In this piece
  1. Why your body reacts this way
  2. The five-minute protocol
  3. What to do if you blank
  4. A note for the walk home

Exam anxiety is not weakness. It is your body preparing to run from a tiger it cannot see.

In the last five minutes before a paper, three things reliably help.

**1. Long exhale**

Breathe in for 4, out for 8. The exhale is the anchor — it activates the parasympathetic nervous system.

**2. Feet on floor**

Press both feet firmly down. Notice five things you can see. Anchor.

**3. Write your name**

A small act of agency. You are here. You have prepared. You will begin.
